A walk up Letham Glen

Letham Glen

This is an interesting and varied walk that I first became aware of when browsing through Hamish Brown’s excellent book, ‘25 walks in Fife’.

Park the car at Letham Glen, which can be found at the eastern end of the A915 in Leven. Head up the main drive and then cross the first stone bridge by some buildings. Head up the well maintained path on the right hand side of the burn, which is a good place for wildflowers such as red campion, comfrey, henbit and herb Robert.

Cross the burn at the bridge at the top of the glen and follow the high path to a park entrance. For those looking for a shorter walk, there is the option of looping your way back down the other side of the burn.

Otherwise, turn right onto a farm track that takes you round the back of Coldstream farm (a rights of way sign is on the farm wall indicating the route to follow). This is a delightful open track that has fine views of Largo Law. There are many wild flowers in summer including speedwell, cow parsley and forget-me-not.

Turn right at a T-junction after the farm and a short distance further on go straight across the main road, following the private road towards Blacketyside House. After the house turn sharp right down to Blacketyside Farm. This is a large soft fruit farm and on the left hand side of the track are numerous static caravans for seasonal farm workers.

A short distance later is a small gift and craft shop that is well worth a browse and further down on the main A915 road is Blacketyside farm shop, which is a good place for refreshments. Cross the road here and go into Silverburn Park. Just past the lodge house take the gate on the right, rather than follow the main drive. Turn right when you come to a T-junction and follow the track to the car park at Silverburn. From here take the narrow path that follows the course of the burn across the golf course and onto the beach. Remember to respect the activities of golfers and not cause any undue disturbance.

Once on the fine sandy beach, head towards Leven, passing a caravan site on the way. Walk along the Leven promenade and then turn right up Church road, straight across a junction into another road, which then veers to the left. Turn right at the junction with Scoonie road, which will take you back to the car park at Letham Glen.

Factfile

Location:
There is a car park at Letham Glen, which is situated just by the roundabout on the eastern end of the A915 in Leven.

Terrain:
It is easy going all of the way. Respect golfers and farm operations.
Distance: 4 miles. Give yourself at least one-and-half to two hours.

What will I see?:
Plenty of wildflowers in summer. Look out for great-spotted woodpeckers in Letham Glen and ringed plovers on the sandy beach near Leven.
