Imagine with Gordon Mitchell

Gordon Mitchell studied art at Edinburgh College of Art from 1970 – 1974 and subsequently pursued a career in teaching art. However, what he really wanted to do was paint full time and by 1989 he decided to do just that.

Since then his art work has won numerous awards and his paintings are represented in a number of important public and private art collections including Kansas City Art Institute, Paisley Art Institute, Ralli Museums, Royal Bank of Scotland, Scottish Arts Council, and the University of Edinburgh.

A prolific painter, Gordon tends to paint intensively during the day in his studio - like a regular job, he says. But what is his art like? He describes himself as an ‘abstract expressionist’ and his work has a Dali quality to it.

He appears able to find inspiration in a group of words or a topical news story, but what you can see in most of his work is a visual pun.

Gordon Mitchell has been described as one of the finest Scottish draughtsman and imaginative painters of his generation. His work is beautifully executed and can be amusing at times, at others ironic. Some say it is dark, but this is not always the case. The paintings range over many subjects from fruit and ceramic vessels to the human form represented as all manner of objects.

He is the master of unexpected juxtaposition and constantly delights his many admirers with his technical brilliance and offbeat sense of humour.

He is a former Convenor of the Royal Glasgow Institute, a member of the Royal Scottish Academy and was formerly the Vice President of the Royal Scottish Society of Painters in Watercolour.

While not based in Fife, Gordon’s paintings are regularly exhibited at the Jerdan Gallery in Crail where they are very popular. “I have spent time in Fife and painted there. Crail is a beautiful place.”

David and Sue Jerdan are fans of Mr Mitchell and always like to have his work hanging. “We exhibit many artists here but we always like to promote the work of artists we particularly enjoy and Gordon is one of these. His paintings are appreciated and they sell well.”
